…..It’s a race to finish the sweets and good foods that will be avoided during lent!!!

Caught in the act!!!

And why is that:

Well, the roots of this tradition go back centuries.  Starting with medieval spring festivals and feasts based on the Christian calendar, the celebration is now a mélange of customs woven together and observed around the world.  Today, Fat Tuesday reflects those roots of spring festivals and religious fasting in preparation for the Holy day of Easter.  Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent (that period of fasting ahead of Easter.)  But prior to the penitential Lenten season, all the fats and sweets and really good stuff in the pantry must be consumed or they will go to waste.  The deadline is Fat Tuesday aka Shrove Tuesday or more famously as Mardi Gras.  For the next forty days, abstaining from excess and even giving up certain favorite things will be the norm.

In Britain, for Shrove Tuesday, it’s Pancake Day!!!

But for Fat Tuesday, much of Europe will relish Paczki. (pronounced poonchkey)
Panczki is traditionally prune-filled; but can be found with custard or assorted fruits.
On Fat Tuesday in much of the world we eat Paczki; in Germany it is Fasching and the sweet is called a Berliner; in Austria it’s called Krapfen. But everywhere it is 400 calories of goodness!!!

It’s All Good!!!
